SHRM Aligned Human Resources Degrees in Idaho
There are many human resources degree programs in Idaho, but only a select few have been fully aligned to the standards and expectations of the Society for Human Resource Management. The SHRM is the leading industry body for human resources standards and professionals, and has a set of standards for its “aligned” degrees that allow them to more fully prepare students for a rewarding career in the field of human resources. Though this alignment is not offered at every school, two universities in the state of Idaho have worked hard to align their program to SHRM standards and therefore offer two of the best such programs available anywhere in the state.
University of Idaho
College of Business
U of I is Idaho’s oldest public university and easily its most prestigious institution of higher education. Notably, the university has produced and enrolled more National Merit Scholars than all of Idaho’s other colleges and universities combined. It’s also recognized as a top educational value in the state and the northwestern region of the United States, and is celebrated for its commitment to smaller class sizes and professional student preparation. As a result, all students who select the “Management and Human Resources” major will complete at least one internship, as required, prior to graduation. They will also be fully prepared for a managerial role or graduate education by the time they receive their degree, and will enjoy excellent statewide networking connections as a result of the university’s large size and broad reach.
B.S.B.A., Management and Human Resources
U of I’s combined major in management and human resources allows students to be versatile when pursuing career options after graduation. In addition to a general knowledge of business concepts, graduates of this program will learn more advanced techniques for managing personnel, finances, and company resources regardless of the department they work in. The human resources component of the program focuses on human resource law and ethics, benefits negotiation and strategy, recruitment efforts, organizational development, and skills that will help HR managers align their efforts with long-term company goals and strategies. A required internship will give students the experience and connections they need to land a position in the field after graduation.

Boise State University
College of Business and Economics
Boise State is perhaps best known for its competitive, NCAA Division I football team, but that’s not all the school has to offer. The university is both an athletic and educational powerhouse, with a fully SHRM-aligned major in human resource management and full AACSB accreditation of its entire College of Business and Economics. Boise State is considered one of the largest and most prestigious public universities in the state, and is consistently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 10 schools in the western and northwestern regions of the country. Students from Boise State have a large professional network available to them throughout Idaho, Montana, and Washington State, predominantly, though the university’s national visibility is also an asset.
B.B.A., Human Resource Management
All students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, regardless of their major, must complete Boise State’s university core and the business program core. These courses range from composition and mathematics to marketing, economics, finance, management, and accounting. Beyond these core courses, all students must complete a strong major in human resource management that focuses on employee recruiting, employee benefits, benefit negotiation and contracts, equal opportunity, human resource laws, and management of human resources activities. All students will also enroll in the required, 3-credit internship elective during their final year in the program while they complete an HR internship off-campus.
