SHRM Chapters in Oklahoma

With opportunities for networking, education, and scholarships, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapters in Oklahoma may be one way to jump start your career in this fast-growing industry. Nearly every large company and many small ones hire human resources professionals to handle the day-to-day screening, hiring, and training for their workforce. New graduates may find that SHRM campus chapters can help them as they prepare for those post-graduation jobs.

SHRM is the largest human resources membership group in the world, with 275,000 members in more than 160 countries. About 575 chapters are affiliated with the organization in the United States, including local chapters for professionals and campus groups for students. Oklahoma has three active student chapters:

Oklahoma State University

Founded in 1890, Oklahoma State University (OSU) is a public, land-grant college offering nearly 200 undergraduate majors. The university’s main campus is based in Stillwater, but the school also has academic locations in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Okmulgee.

OSU’s human resources studies are centered in the business college at the main campus in Stillwater. Students can receive a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a major in management and a focus on human resources. Class topics for the degree may include compensation administration, labor relations and collective bargaining, and employee recruitment. Human resources certificate programs are available at the school’s Oklahoma City campus. In Stillwater, the SHRM campus chapter can supplement your education by keeping you in touch with others in the field. The chapter has earned a Superior Chapter Merit designation from the national office.

SHRM Student Chapter

Oral Roberts University

Oral Roberts University is an interdenominational Christian school based on a 263-acre campus in south Tulsa. The goal of the liberal arts institution is to educate the whole student – mind, body, and spirit. About 3400 students from 50 states and 70 nations are enrolled.

One of the school’s 65 undergraduate majors is the Bachelor of Science in Management. The program promises to meet students’ career objectives by offering cutting-edge business studies with a biblical world view. Students who want to enter the human resources field would select the management major and take courses focusing on their interests. Some related classes include organizational behavior, human resource management, conflict resolution and strategic management. Oral Roberts also offers a master’s degree in management. Both undergraduate and graduate students can take advantage of the resources available through the campus chapter of SHRM.

University of Central Oklahoma

The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) is a public university based in Edmund in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Founded in 1890, the university is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in that region of the nation. Central Oklahoma offers 114 undergraduate degrees and 63 graduate majors to about 17,000 enrolled students.

For human resources students, UCO College of Business offers a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in human resource management as one of its 14 undergraduate degree programs. Baccalaureate candidates are required to take core courses in math, science, history and health. The more specialized business curriculum includes classes such as employee recruitment and selection, ergonomics, introduction to OSHA, business finance, and the legal environment of HR compliance. On the extracurricular front, students can add the local SHRM chapter to their activities as a way to enhance both their campus experience and career planning.
