SHRM Student Chapters in Missouri

Missouri, located in the Midwestern US is the 21st most populous state and is home to many top ranked universities hosting student chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is a professional human resource membership association and provides programs to help members learn about Human Resources and the role it plays in the real world of business. Universities participating in SHRM provide opportunities for students to network on the local level through student chapters. Chapters help students with resume-writing, workshops, internships and company tours to build relationships with local professionals. The following are the affiliated student chapters of the SHRM in Missouri.

GRANTHAM UNIVERSITY

Grantham University, located in Kansas City, offers online distance-learning degree programs. The university is divided into four schools: the Mark Skousen School of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the School of Nursing and Allied Health.  In 2006, Grantham University was ranked 13th out of 27 US distance education programs by eLearning World University Rankings. The SHRM student chapter at Grantham University Kansas City is the first student chapter of the SHRM and is designed to support the university’s business and human resource students. The Chapter is the only virtual Chapter in Kansas City and in Missouri, and provides students the opportunity to participate in networking opportunities while benefiting from the professional association in the same field in which they are pursuing a degree. Grantham University offers an online only Human Resource Management Bachelor of Business Administration Degree.

MISSOURI SOUTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

Located in Joplin, Missouri, Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) is a public state university and was formerly known as Missouri Southern State College. MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY

Located in Springfield, Missouri, Missouri State University (formerly Southwest Missouri State University) is a public university with an official enrollment of 21,059 students. It is the state’s second largest university within the Missouri State University System. The school is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as one of six master’s colleges and universities in Missouri. A Human Resource minor is designed for students who are interested in taking the principles of human resource management with them into the workforce. The goal is better understanding for the student of the goals of individuals, groups and organizations. This minor combines with majors in business, communication, psychology, sociology and related fields.

The SHRM student chapter at MSU exists to facilitate the professional development of students entering human resource careers. The following are the goals and objectives.

1. Provide students with valued, meaningful student membership experiences.
2. Inform and educate students in fundamental and current HR issues.
3. Develop networking with area HR professionals.
4. Equip students to enter the job market competitive in the HR job search.

NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY

Located in Maryville, Missouri, Northwest Missouri State University is state-assisted four-year university offering both graduate and undergraduate programs. With 135 undergraduate and 36 master’s programs, the largest programs are in the Business, Education and Agriculture departments. Every full time student receives a laptop computer to use throughout the school year. For those who want to pursue a career in Human resources, the Department of Business Administration offers a Bachelor of Science in Business or Master of Business Administration with courses in Human Resource management either on-campus or online. SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY

Located in Cape Girardeau Missouri near the banks of the Mississippi River, Southeast Missouri State University is a public accredited university with over 200 areas of study. They offer undergraduate degrees as well as master’s degrees and a Cooperative PhD program with the University of Missouri.  The School of Business offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a minor in Human Resource Management for those want to move forward into a career in Human Resources. Choices for courses for minor in human resources are : Legal and Union Issues in Human Resources, Human Resource Management, Managing and developing talent (covers the Human resource management, training and development of talent). The SHRM student chapter at SMSU is very active and is nationally recognized.  Students interested in a career in HR will have many opportunities to explore the field while earning their degree.

SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY

Located in Saint Louis, Missouri, Saint Louis University (also referred to as SLU) is a private research university and the second oldest Jesuit University in the country. It is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and has a current enrollment of 13,505 students. At the John Cook School of Business, students may choose twelve hours of course credit hours in Human Resource Management.

The department supports two student organizations: the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO). SHRM provides networking opportunities for students, as well as leadership and communication development opportunities, and CEO provides students the opportunity to help operate a small business.

UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI – COLUMBIA

Located in Columbia, Missouri, The University of Missouri (also known as Mizzou, MU, or simply Missouri) is a public research university and is the first public institution west of the Mississippi River. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY

Located in Kansas City, Missouri, The University of Missouri–Kansas City (often referred to as UMKC) is a public research university. The current enrollment for the university is 16,019 students. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-ST LOUIS

Located in Saint Louis, Missouri, the University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL) is the newest of the four universities making up the University of Missouri System. Bachelors, Masters and doctoral programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Education, the College of Business, and the College of Optometry. The College of Business Administration is the largest Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Businesses (AACSB) – accredited business school in the St. Louis area and has an online MBA for those already in their career needing flexibility in their program.

UMSL offers a Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management, an eighteen-hour course focused on the multi-dimensional aspects of personnel operations within business organizations. The curriculum focuses on the formal and informal sides of human resources management. Student must complete six courses, including the following: Organizational Behavior and Administrative Management, Managing Human Resources, Compensation and Benefits, Union-Management Relations and Collective Bargaining, Topics in Human Resource Management and Statistical Analysis for Management Decisions.

Located in Webster Grove, Missouri, Webster University is an American non-profit university that is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. According to the college and university rankings in US News, the university is rated twenty-first among Midwest regional universities.
