SHRM Student Chapters in Florida (A-R)

In this article we will present the first half of our list of SHRM Student Chapters in Florida.

Situated on a southeastern peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Florida Straits with more than 1,250 miles of coastline, Florida is home to some of the most popular amusement parks in the world, including Disneyworld, that attract more than 80 million visitors annually. Florida is also home to numerous Student Chapters of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), which is the biggest worldwide association devoted exclusively to advancements in the field of Human Resources. With over 250,000 members in more than 140 countries, the SHRM endeavors to serve the unique needs of HR professionals through local chapters sprinkled across the globe. When college students take advantage of becoming a member at their university’s SHRM Student Chapter, they can benefit from learning more in-depth HR knowledge outside the classroom and building connections through networking. The following are the first half (A-R) of Student Chapters for the SHRM in Florida.

Barry University

Situated on a 124-acre campus near the Atlantic coastline and the Everglades in Miami, Barry University is a private Catholic institution founded in the Adrian Dominican intellectual traditions. The AACSB-accredited Andreas School of Business offers students the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Management. Furthermore, the Barry School of Adult and Continuing Education offers a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Administration as well as a post-baccalaureate certificate in Human Resources. Those aspiring to be HR professionals are encouraged to join the BU Student SHRM Chapter, which was recognized as one of the ten recipients of the Outstanding Student Chapter Awards at the SHRM Annual Conference in 2008 and has received a Superior Merit Award as well.

Barry University – Orlando

As the satellite campus in eastern Orlando of one of the largest Catholic universities in the Southeast that has been recognized among “America’s Top Colleges” by Forbes magazine for the past three years, Barry University – Orlando has ranked as 16th in the nation for campus ethnic diversity by the U.S. News and World Report. Within the School of Adult and Continuing Education at the Orlando campus, undergraduates have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Administration or Organizational Leadership, whereas graduate students have the chance to earn a Master of Arts in Administration or post-baccalaureate certificate in Human Resource Administration. Student members of the Orlando campus’ BU Student SHRM Chapter also can participate in prep courses for the PHR, SPHR, and GPHR certification examinations online, in-person, or in unique blended formats.

Everest University Online

Tracing its roots back to 1890 when the Tampa campus became the first business college in Florida under the name Tampa College, Everest University (formerly called Florida Metropolitan University) is a private institution with campuses across the state in Brandon, Jacksonville, Lakeland, Largo, Melbourne, Orange Park, Orlando, Pompano Beach, and Tampa. Focused on delivering in-demand career training with flexible class schedules and hands-on experience, the School of Business has training options in Business Law, Computer Applications, Business Enterprise, Principles of Management, Human Resources Management, and Communications. For students who are interested in joining the Everest Student SHRM Chapter to gain increased experience outside of the classroom in Human Resources, membership fees are $35 each year and monthly meetings are held every third Wednesday each month at 7 PM at the Tampa campus.

Florida Atlantic University

Florida Atlantic University – Davie

Located on a 38-acre campus in western Broward County in the second largest campus of the institution, Florida Atlantic University at Davie aims to create a supportive learning environment in particular sensitivity to students of non-traditional ages and culturally diverse backgrounds. The FAU Davie College of Business is recognized by the U.S. News and World Report for having the 114th best online graduate business programs in the nation. Since the College understands that managing resources is critical to an organization’s success, the school offers a Human Resource Management Certificate and HR: Compensation and Benefits Certificate as well as the standard Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Management. In partnership with the campus SHRM Student Chapter, all student members are given a discount to engage in the intensive PHR/SPHR exam preparation course to prepare for national certification as a Professional in Human Resources.

Florida Gulf Coast University

Florida Institute of Technology

Originally started as training grounds for the space industry at the Kennedy Space Center, the Florida Institute of Technology is a private institution in Melbourne that is currently ranked as the 167th best college in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report. Within the Nathan M. Bisk College of Business, students have the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in Business Administration, Global Management, Leadership and Social Responsibility, and Management. The Florida Institute of Technology also hosts the South Brevard Student SHRM Chapter for students who are interested in learning more about effective human resource management strategies. Students can join the 2012 SHRM Membership Super Star Award winning chapter for an annual due price of $25 to receive networking opportunities, internships, mentorship programs, and presentations on current employment-related issues.

Florida International University

As a multi-campus public research institution offering a broad array of undergraduate and graduate level programs, Florida International University is located on the Modesto A. Maidique in Miami and the Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami-Dade County. Ranked as having the 82nd best online graduate business programs in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report, the FIU Chapman School of Business offers aspiring HR professionals the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Human Resource Management or Leadership and Change Management as well as a Master of Science in Human Resource Management. Florida State University

Located in the thriving state capital city of Tallahassee, Florida State University is a comprehensive public institution that is ranked as the 91st best college and 40th top public school in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report. Florida State’s SHRM Student Chapter #5259 is focused on building stronger HR professionals by giving students a glimpse beyond the classroom experience into the real world of work in the Human Resources field. In addition to attending the bi-weekly meetings every other Wednesday at 7 PM in RBA Room 212 with guest HR professional speakers, members of the chapter have the opportunity to engage in a variety of networking events, such as the recent Bowling Social.

Jacksonville University

Nestled at the heart of one of the nation’s most dynamic and thriving metropolitan cities on a beautiful riverfront 198-acre campus, Jacksonville University is a private independent institution that offers its more than 3,500 students an intimate student to faculty ratio of 13:1. Although the National Louis University is based in Chicago, the private non-profit institution has a campus in Tampa that is fully accredited by the Florida Commission for Independent Education. New York Institute of Technology – Florida Center

Ranked by the U.S. News and World Report as the 48th best college and 15th top college for veterans in the North, the New York Institute of Technology is comprehensive private institution with two main campuses in Manhattan and several more scattered around the world, including the Florida Center campus in Fort Lauderdale. At the Florida Center School of Business, students have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management or Decision Sciences as well as a Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Human Resources Management and Labor Relations. Students can also enroll in the Advanced Certificate program in Human Resources Management. The NYIT Student Chapter of the SHRM at the Florida Center campus has accomplished its goal of building student leadership skills by winning the SHRM Superior Merit Award and Outstanding Merit Award consecutively each year. Chapter meetings take place on a monthly basis on Fridays in Harry Schure Hall Room 216B.

Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University is a private institution located in Fort Lauderdale that supports student diversity among working professional adults. Dedicated to the professional development of students pursuing careers with related responsibilities dealing with human resources or personnel administration, the NSU Student SHRM Chapter consists of graduate members who participate in activities on and off campus with active HR professionals.
